Freeport, Pennsylvania - Homestead Jenn & Phil are the co-founders of Rent The Chicken. It started as a way to earn supplemental income and is now full time employment for both stretching across the United States and Canada. They are blessed to be connected with many hard working individuals that make Rent The Chicken successful. In their spare time, they enjoy motorcycling, canoeing, camping, and spending time with their older kitty, Givi and their younger kitty, Henry (because he's not a hen... he's a Henry!). They've been Foster Parents previously and are very connected to their former foster kiddo, Gabriel who owns their hearts. They are very involved with their local church, being on the worship team (Homestead Phil plays the bass guitar), and being involved with the community. Homestead Jenn has a blog about all things on their homestead: Rent The Chicken's Homestead Jenn - Family. Food. Fun!. Homestead Jenn is an Intermittent Faster as of September of 2019 and a runner as of August of 2020 participating in multiple half marathons and other races since - no one is even chasing her! She added triathlon to her list of hobbies finishing her first Ironman 70.3 in 2023! Homestead Phil enjoys chatting on his HAM Radio talking all over the world without a telephone! Seeing the smiles on their renters faces is what they look forward to when making Hatch The Chicken deliveries.
What happens to the chicks?
Here are a number of scenarios as to what happens to the baby chicks after our Hatch The Chicken program is complete:
-
The girls are raised to be hens for Rent The Chicken
-
The girls are raised as breeding stock for Hatch The Chicken
-
The boys are raised to be roosters to fertilize eggs for Hatch The Chicken
-
The girls are raised to lay eggs for our families
-
The boys are raised to protect our flocks to help keep them safe
-
The chicks are sold to families looking to expand their flocks
-
The roosters are sold to families looking to protect their flock

We can't confirm what other organizations do with their baby chicks after a hatching program but we know with our whole hearts that all of the chicks hatched with our Hatch The Chicken program provide a purpose following the rental. We value their lives and value what they bring to our business and those who participate in our programs.
